The Steps Of A Phone System Installation

By Audrey McGuire

Most people will find the process of a phone system installation quite simple. Only a couple of gadgets are required, and as long as the right procedure is followed, the connection to the telephone network interface box should work. Various types of lines can be used for homes or businesses. They can be single, two or four line connections.

Step one of the process is to determine to where you will be laying the telephone cable, which means deciding upon the location of the telephone. This long cable will go from the outside telephone network interface box to your telephone device inside the house/office. You will need the correct length of cable, and you will need to find the outside telephone box.

Once you have your cable, ensuring that a few extra feet of length are allowed on either side, you can start connecting it to the main telephone box. Open the box and insert the wire through the hole at the lower end. Before attaching the wires, you will need to strip them of approximately two inches of protective layering. Four wires will then be open and ready for use.

Further insulation is over these wires, some of which must also be stripped. About a half an inch is needed off the green and red ones that will be used for 'line 1'. These colored wires must be attached to the red and green terminals at the very top of the block of the outside telephone box. To access them, just unscrew the terminals until they are loose.

Bend the wire onto the terminals. The red wire onto the red terminal and the green wire onto the green terminal. Tighten the screws when you are finished to ensure that good contact is made and kept by the wires. A screwdriver is useful for this task.

The outside work is now complete. Screw on the lid of the telephone box, making sure that it is shut properly. Before the inside connection can be completed, you must finish with the telephone cable. It must neatly enter the building at a convenient location.

The installer will need to access the inside of the modular junction block. Once it is opened, it will show the inside 'jack'. The block usually has two openings, one on the side and one at the bottom.

Strip the cable once more of its protective layering. When you have the four wires at hand, take off the insulation tape of the green and red wires. The same wires that you used outside. You will see the modular box has green and red connections inside, and the wires must go on the matching colors.

Ensure that the red and green wires are securely in place, and all screws are tightened again. They must always have a good connection. The last step in the process of phone system installation is to link the phone to the modular jack. There is a special cord used for this purpose, with modular plugs on each of its ends.
