An account of the Pirelli famous calendar

By George Dodson

In the news lately, there have been calendars. That's due to the fact that the Mayan calendar foresaw the end of an era and 2012. They predicted a wholesale change in the beginning of a new 5000 year period, although they didn't predict the end of the world. One of the most famous calendars that's not a topic of conversation is the calendar.

In 1872, the famous Pirelli found his tire and cable company. The only people he employed at that time were 45. earning thousands of dollars, thousands of people is what the company employs now. In 1962 is when the company started the calendar as an advertisement ploy. They aimed this calendar at key markets and originally featured tires. Later in the calendars history, the photographer shot models on the beaches of Cote d'Azur. Sophia Loren was one of the most famous models to appear in the calendar. Her decision to appear in the calendar in 2007, at age 72, was quite controversial. The Pirelli calendar was not stopped by that as its producers have always been ahead of their time.

With the coming of the recession due to the oil crisis in 1974, they discontinued the calendar. The calendar wasn't until it started up again 10 years later. The calendar still featured tires in some form or another, until the calendar became more sophisticated. It was not necessary to show the product finally.

Pirelli wanted only key people have this calendar and therefore the production was small is something you need to keep in mind. Being rare, it was in demand.

Around the world, this calendar eventually became very famous. Being part of the famous racing team is obviously part of the reason. The best photographers and models started being used by Pirelli for its production. It was during this time, the decision was to make a limited number of them and make them valuable. Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss and Helena were among the models and the calendars became collectibles.

Depending on the photographer, the narrative changed. A famous photographer, Peter Bernard shot in the wild landscape of Botswana for example. He wanted a free spirit and natural tone to the layout. Bernard had lived in Africa, and he was familiar with the wild natural landscape.

The tire company printed of the calendar and lead free paper. what Pirelli wanted is for it to be eco-friendly. Environmental friendly is one thing he made sure of the people shooting the calendar models. In Costa Rico, he worked to protect a forested area, to offset the emissions used for producing the calendar.

The very latest calendar features Miranda Kerr and it shot in Brazil. The narrative features models posing themselves and eating bananas, thus depicting a playful attitude. Each year the Pirelli calendar has a different theme of womanhood. Having a place of honor is achieved by combining creativity, beauty and glamor. The excitement is added by its limited run and restriction of ownership.
